Wiimbaamitigoogshiing Program

In the Ojibway language the name wiimbaamitigoogshiing (weem-baa-mittuh-goke-sheen) translates into “the place of the hollowed out trees. Mitigoog (trees) are considered by the Anishinaabek (Ojibway) to be ‘Elders’ as they grow to be very old with their roots extending down into the ground and their branches reaching up to the sky world. For the Anishinaabek, knowledge comes from the land, the sky, the universe and all of creation. When very old trees become hollowed out, they are considered to be very special with the ability to impart the sacred knowledge of how to live our lives in balance with each other and with the land.

Discover a Transformative Learning Journey Rooted in Land, Language, and Culture

Step into a semester like no other, one that takes you beyond the classroom and onto the land, where learning is guided by Indigenous Elders and community members. This immersive, land-based program invites students to experience education through Indigenous knowledge systems that honour relationships, responsibility, and the interconnectedness of all living things.

Grounded in culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy, the program nurtures high expectations, cultural competence, and critical consciousness. Students earn credits through hands‑on interdisciplinary experiences that build identity, community, and a deeper understanding of the land we live on. Students are also provided the opportunity to learn the basics of Anishinaabemowin (the Ojibway language).

Examples of the types of activities offered:

  • Ecological Knowledge: Learn traditional names and teachings of local plants, roots, and trees, including their practical and medicinal uses.
  • Seasonal Learning: Participate in seasonal activities like harvesting maple water and transforming it into maple syrup and maple sugar using traditional methods.
  • Science & Astronomy: Explore Indigenous understandings of celestial cycles and their role in guiding responsibilities and relationships with the land.
  • Sustainable Living: Learn principles of sustainability, food sovereignty, and living respectfully with the land.
  • Artistic Expression: Practice traditional art forms such as quillwork and beadwork, connecting creativity with cultural teachings.
  • Leadership & Governance: Gain insight into Indigenous governance systems and the history of the land, fostering a deeper sense of place and responsibility.

This program is an invitation to learn through connection—connection to Elders, to culture, to the natural world, and to the self. Students leave with strengthened identity, empowered voice, and a richer understanding of Indigenous worldviews that continue to shape and sustain communities today.

If you’re ready for a learning experience that inspires, grounds, and transforms—this is where your journey begins.Ìý
